The primary objective of the strike vote and the sending of the basic service plan to the Labour Council is to create sufficient pressure for employers and the government to conduct sound negotiations and conclude a new collective agreement. We are still finalizing an essential services plan with the Nova Scotia Health Authority. The Nova Scotia Union Council (NSNU, NSGEU, CUPE and Unifor) and the employers` group have concluded the collective bargaining and refer all outstanding issues to arbitrator William Kaplan. Mr. Kaplan was seen as a mediator arbiter for all acute care, collective agreements in an agreement that was ratified by a large majority of workers in May of this year. The agreement is a voluntary agreement for mediation/conciliation of outstanding issues after collective bargaining for each of the bargaining units. Even if this proposal is approved, negotiations will continue for some time. The appointed mediator will attempt to support the parties to an agreement through mediation, but will make a binding decision on the issues that will not be resolved. The parties agreed to use William Kaplan as arbitrator. Kaplan is the mediator for the four bargaining units.
Mediation – the arbitration agreement provides for six-year (2014-2020) wage increases, including retroactive compensation, protects important benefits and provides a mediation arbitration process that will conclude all collective agreements for the four units, health care, support services and administrators by the end of 2018. The four unions look forward to working with mediator William Kaplan, who will try to help the parties reach an agreement through mediation, but will give a final and binding distinction on unresolved issues. The greatest benefit was getting a collective agreement for all nurses, said union president Janet Hazelton. Dear members, negotiations on your next collective agreement have begun. Although your current collective agreement does not expire until March… A collective agreement is a contract negotiated between union members and their employer. CUPE 8920 members vote on whether collective agreements that define wages and working conditions should be accepted. Negotiations for this historic cycle are thus closed. The Council of Care Unions negotiated jointly for the first time after the government legalized the creation of the four health social councils in 2015.
